Meet Our Experienced Doctors

Dr. Brandon Knockum

Dr. Crystal Hayes
Why We Started This Practice
Dr. Hayes grew up in this community and always knew she wanted to come back. After years of training and working elsewhere, she returned with a clear mission: to serve the families who helped shape who she became. "Now it's personal," she says. "I'm seeing children of my old classmates as patients!"
Dr. Knockum brings experience from the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, where he worked with kids who had fallen through the cracks—children with special needs, serious illnesses, and complex dental issues. His philosophy is simple: no child should go without care, no matter what's going on with them.
Together, they wanted to create a place that reflects what they've learned both as dentists and as parents: that good pediatric dentistry is about so much more than fixing teeth.

How We're Different
We Actually Get to Know Your Child
Every child has their own way of expressing feelings and their own comfort level. Some need to work in 10-second increments. Others need "sugar bugs" language to understand what's happening. Some are ready for straight talk about dental disease. We take time to figure out what each child needs—you can't tell just by looking.
Parents Stay With Their Children
This is a family experience, and we want you right there with your child throughout treatment. We start every appointment by talking with parents first, so you're never left wondering what's happening or why your child might be reacting a certain way.
We Make It Make Sense
Both doctors are passionate about education. We break down what's happening in ways that make sense for your family. Want to know why your three-year-old can't sit still for three fillings? We'll explain child development. Need to understand different treatment options for your baby's early cavities? We'll walk through every possibility together.
It's Okay to Be Loud (and Emotional)
This is a pediatric office, not a quiet adult dental practice. Sometimes kids cry, get excited, or need to move around—and that's perfectly normal. We've created what Dr. Hayes calls a "no-judge zone" because the only thing we care about is supporting you and your child.
What Families Tell Us
Parents often say they feel heard here in ways they haven't experienced at other dental offices. We ask about your child's "do's and don'ts" before we start. Has a severe gag reflex? We'll be extra careful. Needs consistent breaks? We'll work at their pace.
Kids tell us they like that we explain things and ask if they have questions. When children feel like they're part of what's happening instead of just something being done to them, they do so much better.

Our Promise
We promise to treat your child the way we'd want our own children treated. Dr. Hayes puts it best: "I am a dentist, yes. But I'm also a professionally-trained Mom! This is your baby, so you need to tell me what you're comfortable with and we'll figure out the approach together."
Whether your child needs routine cleanings, has multiple cavities, requires special accommodations, or you're dealing with a dental emergency, we're here to help. We believe every child deserves compassionate dental care close to home, and we're honored to be Pender County's pediatric dental practice.

Making Every Visit Comfortable
Before Your Visit
While you're waiting, kids can unwind in our play area with video games, or parents can grab a drink from our beverage bar. We've found that a relaxed start makes everything go smoother.
During Treatment
Each patient room has its own flat screen TV where kids can watch their favorite Netflix shows or listen to music that helps them feel at ease. We always have cozy blankets and pillows on hand—sometimes a little extra comfort makes all the difference.
For Every Family's Needs
We welcome children with special needs and work closely with families to create the most comfortable experience possible. Our Saturday appointments mean busy families can find time that works for everyone.
The goal is simple
we want your child to actually look forward to coming back. When kids feel comfortable and entertained, dental care becomes just another positive part of their routine.
